Guardians, Yankees set starting pitching rotations for games 1-3 of the American League Division Series

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Pitching matchups for the first three games of the American League Division Series between the Guardians and Yankees are set.

Cleveland will start right-hander Cal Quantrill in the opener on Tuesday at 7:37 pm, while the Yankees will start righty Gerrit Cole.

Quantrill faced New York once in the regular season, picking up a no decision at Yankee Stadium on April 23. He allowed three runs on six hits while striking out a pair and walking three in 6 1/3 innings. Cole faced Cleveland twice, earning a pair of wins, including a 10-2 victory at Yankee Stadium on April 24. In that game, he tossed a scoreless 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and striking out nine while walking just one.

Cole is 5-2 with a 3.15 ERA in eight career regular season starts against Cleveland with 60 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings. He has made two dominant playoff starts against Cleveland, winning game two of the 2018 ALDS for Houston with 12 strikeouts in seven innings at Minute Maid Park. In 2020, he opened the AL wild card series with 15 strikeouts in 7 2/3 scoreless innings at Progressive Field.

Quantrill has made three relief appearances against New York since his start in April. He holds a 3.38 career ERA in 10.2 innings with three strikeouts and five walks against New York.

Game two will feature Cleveland ace Shane Bieber against New York lefty Nestor Cortes on Thursday at 7:37 p.m

Bieber is 1-1 in three career regular season starts against the Yankees, with a 5.74 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings. He has never started a game at Yankee Stadium. He is 0-1 against New York in the playoffs, including a disastrous outing in the 2020 wild card round that saw him allow seven runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings at Progressive Field.

Cortes is 1-0 in five regular season appearances (two starts) against Cleveland. That win came July 2 in the second game of a doubleheader at Progressive Field where he allowed a run on three hits, striking out six batters in seven innings. Cortes took a no decision in his April 23 outing against the Guardians at Yankee Stadium. He will be making his postseason debut on Thursday.

Game three starters include Cleveland righty Triston McKenzie and Yankees right-hander Luis Severino in a matchup set for Progressive Field on Saturday. First pitch time for that game remains TBD.

McKenzie is 1-0 in two career regular season starts against New York, including a brilliant outing on July 3 where he held the Yankees scoreless across seven innings with seven strikeouts and one hit allowed.

McKenzie has never pitched in Yankee Stadium. He made his postseason debut against New York in 2020 at Progressive Field, pitching 1 1/2 relief innings in a wild card game two loss. McKenzie struck out a pair, but allowed two walks and a two-run home run to Gary Sanchez in a 10-9 loss.

Severino is 2-1 with a 3.26 ERA in five regular season starts against Cleveland. He has compiled 27 strikeouts and 10 walks in 30 1/3 innings when facing the Guardians. He did not pitch against Cleveland in the 2022 regular season.

Severino struck out nine Cleveland batters and allowed three runs in seven innings to earn the victory in game four of the 2017 ALDS at Yankee Stadium for his only career postseason win.
