Shirtless Rafael Nadal soaks up the sun on a yacht in Formentera

He dramatically pulled out of Wimbledon last week on the eve of his semi-final against Nick Kyrgios with an abdominal tear.

And Rafael Nadal was taking some time out to relax after the disappointing tournament as he enjoyed a holiday in Formentera on Monday.

The 36-year-old Spaniard showed off his sporty physique as he soaked up the sun on board a yacht and enjoyed a jet ski ride.

He stayed cool in the summer heat wearing a pair of patterned light blue swimming shorts that showed off his deep tan.

Rafa was accompanied by a male friend during his time on the boat, but his wife Maria Francisca Perello – who is pregnant with their first child – was not with him.

The tennis star looked happy and relaxed during the day out at sea where he energetically jumped on a jet ski and enjoyed a ride around the waves.

It comes after last week Rafael gave up his struggle to win the calendar Grand Slam by pulling out of Wimbledon.

The star announced that he was pulling out after a 45-minute practice session earlier on Thursday in which he clearly looked hampered.

By doing so he gave Nick Kyrgios a free pass into what was his first grand slam final.

Nadal remains unbeaten at Slams in 2022 after winning the Australian and French Opens. He decided that the abdominal injury hindering his serve was not going to allow him to compete properly.

Nadal’s unlikely push for the calendar Grand Slam was always likely to be derailed by his increasingly uncooperative body.

At the French Open he spoke of how his doctor needed to ‘put his foot to sleep’ to get through the tournament and that he was not going to go through a course of injections again for the grass season.

Such has been his continuing success that it is easy to forget that he is closer to 40 than 30, and he missed the second half of last season with the first outbreak of foot problems.

At a press conference on Thursday evening at 7:20pm, Nadal confirmed: ‘Unfortunately as you can imagine I am here because I have to pull out of the tournament.

As everyone saw yesterday I have been suffering with a pain in the abdomen and something was not OK there. That is confirmed, I have a tear in the muscle and the communication is too late.

‘I was thinking the whole day I was thinking about the decision to make but I think it doesn’t make sense to go, even if I try through my career to keep going.

‘It is very tough circumstances but it is obvious if I keep going the injury will be worse and worse.’

‘I never thought about the calendar slam, I thought about my diary and my happiness,’ Nadal said.

I make the decision because I don’t believe I can win two matches under the circumstances.

It’s not only I can’t serve at the right speed, it’s I can’t do the normal movement to serve.

‘After that to imagine myself winning two matches, and for respect for myself in some way, I don’t want to go out there and not be competitive enough to play at the level I need to play to achieve my goals.’
