How to maintain your electric car for long-term use: simple tips

Owning an electric car is quite easy. It’s even easier to maintain if you follow some basic habits. You don’t have engine oil, clutch or traditional gearbox to worry about. But your EV still needs care, especially when it comes to the battery and daily use.Start with the battery, as it is the most important part of your car. You don’t need to charge it to 100 percent every time. Try to keep the charge between 20 to 80 percent for daily use. This helps reduce stress on the battery and improves its life. Also, avoid running it to zero again and again. It’s okay to have a deep discharge occasionally, but doing it regularly is not ideal.Fast charging is useful, but it shouldn’t be your default option. This generates more heat than slow charging, and the heat affects the health of the battery over time. Use the fast charger when you’re traveling long distances or need a quick top-up. For regular use, slow or home charging is a better option.Temperature plays a big role in how your EV will perform. If possible, park your car in a shady area or inside a covered space. Leaving it in direct sunlight for long periods of time, especially in extreme heat, may affect battery efficiency. In cold areas, pre-conditioning the car when plugged in can help the battery function better.Your driving style also matters. Electric cars feel fast because of the instant torque, but aggressive driving can reduce efficiency and put extra strain on the battery. Try to drive smoothly with gradual acceleration and braking. Make good use of regenerative braking, as it helps recover energy and also reduces wear on brake components.

Tires are another area you shouldn’t overlook. EVs are generally heavier, so tires wear out faster. Check tire pressure regularly and keep it at the recommended level. This helps maintain efficiency and improves safety. Rotating tires at frequent intervals also ensures even wear. Most electric cars come with software updates that improve performance and efficiency. If your car supports over-the-air updates, install them when available. These updates can improve the range, charging behavior and even the driving experience. It’s also a good idea to use the correct driving mode. Eco and Normal modes are best suited for everyday driving as they optimize battery usage. Sport mode is fun, but it consumes more energy, so use it only when needed. Finally, don’t skip regular service checks. Even though EVs require less maintenance, parts like brakes, suspension and cabin filters still need attention. Following the recommended service schedule will keep your car in good condition. Taking care of an electric car is based on small, consistent habits. Charge it smart, run it smoothly and avoid extremes. Do this, and your EV will remain efficient and reliable for a long time.
