The Himachal Pradesh government has made it mandatory to install electric vehicle charging stations in commercial, public and semi-public buildings as well as new real estate projects across the state. Officials on Tuesday said the provision comes under the Himachal Pradesh Town and Country Planning (17th Amendment) Rules, 2026, PTI reported.Town and Country Planning Minister Rajesh Dharmani said the decision is in line with model building bye-laws and aims to ensure that urban infrastructure keeps pace with the growing trend of electric vehicles. He said the state is working towards becoming a green energy state and urban development policies are being updated to support sustainable development.
India’s electric vehicle market has been growing rapidly in the last few years. Electric two-wheelers continue to lead the sales, followed by three-wheelers, while electric passenger vehicle sales have also seen steady growth, crossing the one lakh units mark annually. Pressure from the central and state governments through incentives, low GST rates and production-linked schemes have played an important role in accelerating its adoption.Almost every major automaker in India is now present in the EV space. Companies like Tata Motors, Mahindra, MG Motor and Hyundai already have electric cars on sale, while Maruti Suzuki has recently entered the segment. In the two-wheeler sector, brands like Hero Vida, TVS Motor Company, Ather Energy and Bajaj Auto have built strong EV portfolios.
