When Kia India launched the Sonet in 2020, the compact SUV segment was already filled with strong players like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and Maruti Suzuki Brezza. At the time, Kia itself was new to India, having entered the market only a year earlier with the Seltos. Many believed that the brand was late to an already busy party. The opportunity was clear. During the Covid period, the sub-4 meter SUV segment started to boom and within a few months, emerged as one of the fastest growing categories with the growth rate crossing 42 per cent. What Kia needed to do seemed simple on paper, but nothing was easy. The carmaker had to offer a well-thought-out, well-rounded package with enough appeal to compete with the popular boys. And in September 2020 the story started taking shape. Even before the deliveries began, the compact SUV had crossed the 25,000 booking mark. The sonnet had announced its arrival. Six years later, the model recently crossed the 5 lakh sales mark and let’s now understand its success story.
kia sonet :The design that was perfect
First generation Kia Sonet.
One of the biggest features of the Sonet was its design. It looked modern and SUV-like without being exaggerated or polarizing. There was something for everyone’s tastes, including younger buyers and families looking to upgrade from a hatch. Needless to say, it’s premium enough to stand out from day one. Elements like the ‘tiger-nose’ grille, sharp lighting package, aggressive bumpers and lots of chrome work made it instantly desirable. And voila! The base of the recipe was already strong. Next, it’s time to add the feature. Now, over time, Indian buyers have moved from wanting efficiency to wanting a little bit of everything.
Kia Sonet: Feature-rich from day one
Kia made sure that the Sonet came with a strong equipment list. The model offered features like a sunroof, leatherette upholstery, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, cruise control, wireless charger, air purifier and Bose sound system right from its debut. It also had a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen with connected car technology like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. At the time, many of these features were rare or completely absent in competing compact SUVs.
Kia Sonet: Wide range of engine and gearbox options
Another major factor behind the success of the Sonet was its diverse powertrain line-up. At launch, it offered petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel engines with multiple transmission options. The 1.2-litre NA petrol engine produced 83 hp and 115 Nm of torque and was paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The more powerful 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 120 hp and 175 Nm and can be mated to a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT.Talking about diesel, it had a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produced 100 hp and 240 Nm, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. At the time of launch, the Sonet was the only compact SUV in India to offer a diesel engine with torque converter automatic. To this day, you still get these powertrain options. And it has contributed significantly to its sales.
Kia Sonet: redesign and continued evolution
Another thing that contributed to its success story is that Kia has constantly updated the Sonet to keep it fresh. The 2024 facelift brought refreshed styling with sharper bumpers, updated grille and revised lighting elements. The biggest highlight of the update was the introduction of ADAS, making the Sonet one of the few compact SUVs in India to offer ADAS.Additionally, it received features such as a 360-degree camera and standard equipment such as six airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist and a tire pressure monitoring system.
Kia Sonet: Sales pace and market response
The strong product package of Sonet has now resulted in impressive sales numbers. Today, the Sonet contributes about 35 percent of Kia India’s domestic sales and recently achieved the milestone of 5 lakh overall sales. Of these, 2 lakh models were sold in the last two years alone after the introduction of the facelifted version in early 2024.Sunhak Park, Chief Sales Officer, Kia India, said, “Crossing the 5 lakh sales mark of Sonet is a proud moment for all of us at Kia India. Every Sonet sold represents a customer who believed in Kia and is a powerful endorsement of the trust that Indian buyers have shown in us. This journey reinforces how our focus on providing meaningful design, advanced technology and reliable performance has resonated with buyers across the country. We are deeply grateful to our customers for playing an integral role in this success.”On the other hand, the success of the model is not limited to India. Exports have played an important role in its journey, with over 1 lakh units shipped to around 70 international markets.Today, the Sonet continues to compete with models like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Mahindra XUV3X0, often giving tough competition on the sales charts.
