Delhi heatwave: Riders can adopt simple methods to avoid heatstroke

With temperatures in New Delhi already reaching above 42 degrees Celsius and the forecast predicting a maximum temperature of 43-45 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heat wave conditions in the capital. Authorities have warned about rising heat stress and advised people to avoid exposure during peak hours and stay hydrated. For motorcycle and scooter riders, this kind of heat is not only uncomfortable but can also be risky. Unlike car users, riders are exposed to direct hot winds, engine heat and prolonged periods under the sun. This increases the likelihood of dehydration and heatstroke, especially in stop-go traffic where airflow is limited. One simple thing riders can do is manage time. You can avoid riding during the afternoon rush hours, usually between 12 noon and 4 pm. Riding early in the morning or late in the evening is very easy on the body. Even a small change in time can bring a big change.

Hydration is equally important. You should keep water with you and take short breaks during long journeys. Experts often recommend drinking water regularly instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. Light fluids like ORS or coconut water can also help maintain energy levels. What you wear also matters. Many riders think that heavier gear provides better protection, but in extreme heat, breathable riding jackets with ventilation panels are more practical. You can also use a light-coloured helmet and neck scarf to reduce exposure to direct heat. Another thing that riders often ignore are early warning signs. Dizziness, excessive sweating, headache, or sudden fatigue are clear indicators. If you feel any of these, you should stop riding immediately and rest in a shady or cool place. In such a situation, it is more important to ride wisely rather than riding fast. A few small precautions can help you stay safe and keep your daily commute organized even in the scorching heat of Delhi.
